Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial Cystitis is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall. Its cause is unknown, and it does not respond to antibiotics like ‘common’ cystitis, which is a urinary tract infection. Although Interstitial Cystitis can affect people of any age, race, or gender, it most commonly occurs in women.

If you answer ‘yes’ to several of the following questions, you may have Interstitial Cystitis:

  • Do you have excessive urinary frequency? (5-8 voids/day is within normal limits.) At times in severe cases, this may be every 10 minutes.
  • Is the urge to urinate accompanied by pain, pressure, or spasms?
  • Do you have abdominal, urethral, or vaginal area pain?
  • Do you have pain with sexual intercourse?

At Orthopedic & TMJ Physical Therapy Center, we will work with you to design and implement a personal treatment program to meet your specific Interstitial Cystitis needs and lifestyle. Self-help skills emphasized are biofeedback, stress reduction, diet, bladder retraining, and exercise. Gentle manual therapies may be used to release trigger points and soft tissue restrictions. We place a high priority on education and hands-on treatment in a comfortable, safe atmosphere.
